3 Principles of ethical argumentation
Reiter

Learning objectives: This module introduces you to the skill of building and analysing arguments. You'll learn how arguments work in general, what makes ethical reasoning distinctive, and how to recognise and reconstruct ethical arguments. Reconstructing ethical arguments means carefully tracing and clarifying the reasoning behind moral judgments, to see how they are constructed—and whether they truly hold up.
Methods: To get things started, you'll watch a short film that brings some of the key ideas to life. We’ll use short quizzes to check your understanding as we go, helping you get to grips with the essentials. Towards the end of the module, you’ll apply what you’ve learned by working through some short texts that raise ethical questions.
Requirements: You’ll be asked to reconstruct arguments based on a range of examples, focusing particularly on ethical reasoning. You’ll write these up, and then work together in groups to discuss and reflect on one another’s interpretations, challenging and refining your ideas along the way.
